A BeppoSAX observation of the massive X-ray binary 4U 1700-37

چکیده
A 0.5–200 keV BeppoSAX spectrum of the nonpulsating high-mass X-ray binary 4U 1700-37 is presented. The spectrum is well characterized by the standard accreting pulsar model of an absorbed power-law with a photon index of 1.07±0.02 0.03, sharply modified by an exponential cutoff above 5.9 ± 0.2 keV. The e-folding energy of the cutoff is 23.9 ± 0.5 keV. A soft bremsstrahlung component with a temperature of 0.2±0.1 keV is also required, together with a narrow iron line at 6.5 keV. Both continuum components are absorbed by a column of (5.1 ± 0.2) × 1022 atom cm−2. There is some evidence for the presence of a broad cyclotron absorption feature at ∼37 keV, although we cannot exclude the possibility that this is due to an incorrect modeling of the continuum, or instrumental effects. The hypothesis that the compact object is a neutron star rather than a black hole seems most likely.

The BeppoSAX view on the Galactic Massive X – ray Binary 4 U 0114 + 65
A pointed observation on the galactic high-mass X–ray binary 4U 0114+65 was carried out with BeppoSAX in order to compare the X–ray spectral and timing characteristics observed by this satellite over the broadest range of energies ever (1.5–100 keV) with the information previously obtained with other spacecraft. The light curve of 4U 0114+65 shows a large flare at the beginning of the BeppoSAX ...

We report the discovery of type-I X-ray bursts from the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1708–40 during the 100 ks observation performed by BeppoSAX on 1999 August 15–16. Six X-ray bursts have been observed. The unabsorbed 2–10 keV fluxes of the bursts range from ∼ (3 − 9) ×10 erg cms. A correlation between peak flux and fluence of the bursts is found, in agreement with the behaviour observed in other ...
متن کاملA look with BeppoSAX at the low - luminosity Galactic X – ray source 4 U 2206 + 54
A pointed observation of the low-luminosity galactic source 4U 2206+54 was carried out in November 1998 with BeppoSAX. The light curve of 4U 2206+54 shows erratic variability on a timescale of ∼1 hour; neither hardness variations nor time periodicities are detected throughout this 67 ks long observation. Thanks to the wide spectral coverage capabilities of BeppoSAX we could observe the source X...
متن کاملCorrelated Radial Velocity and X-ray Variations in Hd 154791/4u 1700+24
We present evidence for approximately 400 day variations in the radial velocity of HD 154791 (V934 Her), the suggested optical counterpart of 4U 1700+24. The variations are correlated with the previously reported 400 day variations in the X-ray flux of 4U 1700+24, which supports the association of these two objects, as well as the identification of this system as the second known X-ray binary i...

A pointed observation of the galactic high-mass X–ray binary 4U 0114+65 was carried out with BeppoSAX to compare the X–ray spectral and timing characteristics observed by this satellite over the broadest range of energies thus far (1.5–100 keV) with the information previously obtained with other spacecraft. The light curve of 4U 0114+65 shows a large flare at the beginning of the BeppoSAX point...
